I have a very important announcement to make. Effective November 4th, 2008, I am resigning from the Florida Senate. A lot of thought and prayer went into my decision, but the deciding factor was how it would affect you, the taxpayers. I did not want to cost local taxpayers over half a million dollars to hold a special election for my replacement in the Florida Senate should I be elected to Congress. My number one priority in the 26 years I’ve spent in public office has been to reduce wasteful spending. It would be hypocritical for me to create the need for a special election at such a huge cost to taxpayers. By announcing my resignation now, the election for my replacement will take place on the regular ballot.
It will be hard for me to no longer represent Senate District 24. The past 8 years have been truly wonderful. Together we’ve accomplished great things for and in the district. I rest a little easier knowing that I might be able to represent many of the same constituents, only this time on a Congressional level. If I am elected to represent Florida’s 15th Congressional District, it will also reunite me with former constituents from Indian River County that I served before Senate redistricting and while a member of the Florida House. It is my great hope that you continue to support me so that I may continue to serve you.
~ Warmest Regards, Bill
Posey Prevents Costly Special Election
Melbourne – In an effort to prevent taxpayers from having to pay for a costly special election, Bill Posey, Republican candidate for Congress, sent a letter today to Governor Crist resigning from the State Senate effective November 4, 2008.
“It has been brought to my attention that my successful bid for Congress would require a special election to fill Senate District 24 and I do not want Florida’s taxpayers to incur this unnecessary expense.” Posey said in the letter.
By making this decision now, the election to fill Florida’s 24th Senate seat will be held with the regular elections in August and November.
“In the 26 years I have served in public office, it has always been my top priority to identify and cut government waste and make government more accountable. I think it is critical to lead by example and this is one way I can save Florida’s taxpayers some money,” Posey said.
Posey, who has served in the Florida Senate for 8 years is now running for Congress in the seat currently held by Dave Weldon. Weldon announced in January that he was retiring and has since endorsed Posey.
The central issue for Bill Posey’s Congressional campaign is to cut wasteful spending in government and make Congress more accountable, just as he helped do here in Florida. Florida’s 15th Congressional District includes most of Brevard and Osceola Counties, all of Indian River County, and a small portion of Polk County.
Posey was first elected to the Florida Senate in 2000. The 24th Senate District covers large portions of Brevard, Orange, and Seminole Counties.
