Hello friends!
This is a very exciting week for the Space Coast. Monday afternoon, I had the very distinct pleasure of joining with Governor Charlie Crist at the Brevard Community College Planetarium for a very important announcement: an agreement between the U.S. Air Force and the State of Florida to make Space Launch Complex (SLC) 36 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station available for operational use by the State.
This means that the State of Florida will be able to use SLC 36 as a commercial launch facility. This is like Christmas in August and exactly what I had in mind when I sponsored the Space Act (SB 2426) during the 2008 legislative session. We were able to appropriate $14.5 million for the launch complex infrastructure upgrades necessary to develop a commercial launch facility.
I have long been an advocate of NASA and space exploration. Over the past decade, I have served on The Florida Space Authority, Spaceport Florida, and now Space Florida, all the while trying to reduce the regulation and red tape which existed between government agencies and the private sector. I knew the future full potential of our space center hinged upon the inclusion of commercial space flight operations and am beyond thrilled to see it all coming together!
God Bless!
Bill
