Hello friends,
As you are all well aware, tomorrow is the 7th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. It is hard to believe that it has been 7 years since that tragic day when Americans were attacked here on our own soil. The world has changed so much and in so many ways since then; I know it will never be the same. And yet, our daily lives go on uninterrupted. For many people, it is still hard to face the reality that we truly are a nation at war.
As a friend of mine, Major General John Cleland, said recently, “It is hard to realize, because we aren’t called upon to sacrifice the way we had in past wars. The only people at war are the brave soldiers and their families, the rest of us are at the mall.”
It feels this way because we are fighting a different kind of war. Our enemies have no borders, no real armies. Instead, they are a people whose belief system is fundamentally opposed to us and our way of life. Their children are raised and trained to hate Americans and they are taught to emulate the evil men who carried out 9/11. They do not respect life or recognize human rights and dignity. And they will never fight by means of traditional warfare – rather they will exploit any means possible to cause terror on our people.
I call upon you all to remember that no matter how imperfect our nation might be, the American Experiment at representative self government and our love and protection of individual rights and life is the single best weapon we have to fight this untraditional war. Our very nature helps us spread knowledge and empower people and our strength as a nation continues to serve as a beacon for all mankind.
America will stand and shine the light of freedom on the rest of the world. We will carry on this fight and we will win. Not because of the power of our actions, but because of the power of our ideals.
Our brothers and sisters who perished on 9/11 will never be forgotten so long as good people, like you, continue to honor their memory. From great tragedy often comes great courage. We saw that in the brave policemen and firemen who ran in to those buildings while thousands where trying to run out, we saw it in the group of passengers on United Flight 93 who banded together to bring their plane down in order to avoid even more devastation, and we see it today in the soldiers who fight on the front lines halfway around the globe.
Let us recommit ourselves to the power that we gained on that sorrowful day. The power we all have to recognize America is the Light of Freedom. Let us live each day the best we can, serving as examples of true liberty. We owe that to our fallen citizens. I thank you for having the courage to remember and the strength to ensure we never forget.
God Bless,
Bill
